Information About the Work
This work is an audiovisual representation of the music piece Scarlet Red by NXMERCY. The visuals were created analogue. The reaction of various liquids in a petri dish were filmed with a macro camera. Since every sound of the track was visually mapped, the editing was very elaborate. The typical structure of a techno piece (repetitive, articulated, large soundscape) alternates between 16/32/64 beats. The auditory changes follow this rhythm.
The colour palette is very minimalistic (black, white, red and green). The focus is predominantly on textures. The most contrasting colours, black and white, stand out even more through inversion and perfect the visualisation of energetic music. The discreet use of green with inversion of red gives the viewer’s eye a special impression. The colour red has been given a symbolic form: Danger, fire, blood – fitting for the dystopian mood of the piece, despite the abstractness of the genre.
The music video was mapped into the Old Synagogue of the Kunstverein Oerlinghausen and thus became a digital exhibition. With this, the wall between the analogue and the digital is crumbling – just like the liquids that have been assembled in analogue, recorded digitally, edited, then brought back into analogue space and can ultimately only be seen on screens. However, you can stretch this digital space and experiment with it and maybe even discover benefits that show the world with a different perspective.
One thing Kati promises you: You have never been so fascinated by washing-up liquid and milk.
