Alexandra Sonntag, 1969 in Herford geboren und nach Abschluss eines Studiums an der Hochschule für Bildende Kunst Braunschweig als Meisterschülerin von John M. Armleder in Bielefeld und Genf zu Hause, stellt die Landschaft mit ihren Vegetationsformen und den in ihr lebenden Geschöpfen ins Zentrum ihrer Malerei. Dabei sind Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit bei Alexandra Sonntag keine Gegensätze. Sie sind gleichsam verbunden durch einen inneren Saumpfad, an dessen Rändern eigenwillige Formen erzählt werden. Landschaft als offenes Spielfeld der Natur wahrzunehmen, als Empfindung, aber auch als einen ambivalenten, kunsthistorischen Begriff, das ist der Referenzrahmen dieser Bilder.

Alexandra Sonntag, born in Herford in 1969 and at home in Bielefeld and Geneva, after completing her studies at the Braunschweig University of Art as a master student of John M. Armleder, places the landscape with its vegetation forms and the creatures living in it at the centre of her painting. In Alexandra Sonntag’s work, abstraction and figuration are not opposites. They are connected, as it were, by an inner mule track, at the edges of which idiosyncratic forms are narrated. Perceiving landscape as an open playing field of nature, as a sensation, but also as an ambivalent, art-historical concept – that is the frame of reference for these paintings.
